Did you know that Sunday, June 5th is Cancer Survivor Day? What a great thing to be able to celebrate! Imagine the impact surviving cancer has on an individual. Now, imagine the impact it has as it makes a domino effect on that individual’s caregiver, loved ones, and friends.
An individual who has had and survived cancer is forever changed. So are the people who know that individual. They watch the loved one struggle to understand, grieve for the changes to their life, and fight to overcome and beat the disease. It’s not easy. When victory comes, it is sweet, but accepted with caution and anxiety as doctor recheck visits approach. As those visits become less frequent and the years go by, the feelings of celebration become more pronounced.
In the US, there are 11 million cancer survivors we need to remember and honor on this special day. Think of all those you know who have endured. It’s amazing how often this dreaded disease touches someone we know. As we honor them, let’s give thanks for having them with us and celebrate lives well-lived and battles hard-won. I know that I will be giving thanks for the many people I know that have battled cancer and have survived.
Tell a survivor how glad you are that they won the fight. Give them a hug. Look deep into the eyes of a warrior.
